News from the Ops. Man. - Mike Procell, Operations Manager

Mike Procell
Hi, Mike, the operations manager at KRCC, here. As you've no doubt heard by now, our Spring Membership Drive begins on Monday, April 21st. A quick, but big thanks to all of you who have already renewed your membership or become new members recently. EarlyBird members help keep the on-air portion of our drive short, and that means interupting our our regular programming less. Now, if you feel like going a bit above and beyond the call of duty, we can always use help on our telephone banks during the drive. If you volunteer to help us answer those phones, we promise to try to make it an enjoyable experience. If you are interested in helping or want to find out more, contact me at 473-4801 or mike@krcc.org. And stay tuned for details on our open house, which will precede the drive, April 19th & 20th. Hopefully the weather will cooperate as we are planning another big backyard blowout here at 912 N. Weber.

The Spring Drive is Here!-

Happy Springtime from KRCC's membership department! I'm really excited to see all our new and longtime members at the Spring open house, April 19th and 20th from 10am-6pm. Come enjoy gelato from Dogtooth Coffee and live music- and renew your membership! Take advantage of the many NEW EarlyBird premiums we're offering, including VIP tickets to see Ira Glass at Armstrong Hall in June, Art Classes at the Sangre de Christo Art Center in Pueblo, and passes to the Colorado Springs Fine Art's Center's Remembering Marilyn Monroe exhibit. Better yet, join or renew ONLINE and pick up an extra premium for saving us time and paper. Thank you in advance for helping us reach our goal of $185K this Spring.

Update - Mary Ellen Davis, Underwriting Sales Maven

Mary Ellen Davis
This is the calm before the membership drive storm. My desk holds five stacks of underwriters’ files, all related to the spring drive through gift certificates and on-air challenges. Our underwriters, like our members, are faithful and relentless in their support. Like you, they commit to helping us because they want to minimize the on-air portion of the drive. When you receive your renewal letter in the mail, please re-join as soon as possible. We truly appreciate it, and along with that good feeling you get from doing the right thing, you’ll receive gift certificates, EarlyBird discounts, and special member-only giveaways all year long.

Upcoming Events - Jeff Bieri, Program Director

Some great live entertainment is coming to Colorado Springs!

On Friday the 28th of March, Alvin Youngblood Hart will be opening for Etta James at the Pikes Peak Center. Then, the following evening, Art Garfunkel will be doing his Garfunkel-thang on the same stage. We've got tickets we're giving away on air, so be listening....

On Friday night the 4th of April, Daniel Johnston will be at a book signing and performance at Smokebrush Theater. For those of you not familiar with Daniel Johnston, his influence in the art world is pretty amazing. His music has won acclaim from artists like David Bowie, Eddie Vedder, Beck and Matt Groening. Member discount tickets are on sale now at KRCC.

Legendary bluesman, BB King will be at the PIkes Peak Center on April 9th, and we'll be giving away tickets for the show on KRCC - don't touch that dial!

KRCC has teamed up with The Black Sheep to promote the Kimya Dawson concert on April 21st. If you saw last year's Grammy nominated film "Juno," you heard Kimya's music in the soundtrack. Again, member tickets will be on sale soon at KRCC.

Wilco is coming to town on May 8th! Tickets for the Pikes Peak Center show are on sale now at Ticketswest.com, but we'll be giving away tickets for that one as well if you're feeling lucky and want to hold off....

Member-only ticket sales are brisk for Ira Glass in Armstrong Hall on June 14th - we open up sales to the general public on April 1st, so don't wait on this one. I foresee a mad rush wanting in on the entertainment.

We're also lining up Blues Under the Bridge II. This years festival on June 21st will feature Koko Taylor and numerous other acts. Tickets will be going on sale soon, and, yes, if you're a member of KRCC you will get a substantial ticket discount.

Update from the News Department

KRCC hires News Director!

KRCC NEWSWe've spent the past month or so reading resumes and interviewing candidates for News Director at KRCC. I'm happy to say that we've made an offer to a candidate and it has been accepted. We'll make an official announcement in the coming weeks.

While we're down a News Director, our network of stringers and freelancers has really come through for KRCC. Brian Larson and Kirk Siegler from KUNC have been great about pitching us stories. Grace Hood and Shelly Schlender at KGNU have been contributing as well. If you haven't already, check-out Shanna Lewis' Prayer Scarves piece that we ran recently [LINK]. Michelle Mercer's recent piece on drilling in Baca National Wildlife Refuge brought a lot of comments and praise to KRCC. We've even been lucky enough to run Eric "Buzz-kill" Whitney's stories from his new post at KCFR as their health reporter. And of course, our intrepid Rocky Mountain Community Radio Capitol Coverage reporter Bente Birkeland has sent us a story nearly every day! If you haven't had a chance to check them out, along with her regular excellent work, I recommend listening to her Capitol Coversation series. We've been running it on Fridays and Mondays. She gathers a number of her print-reporter peers for very interesting and insightful weekly conversations about the week's events at the capitol and the effects of those events in a regional and national context.

Station Events...

I have to say that I love the Spring Membership Drive. It always seems to fly by, and our annual Open House prior to the drive seems to get better every year. I hope you can make it out on the 19th and 20th of April. We'll have treats for all, from gelato to our usual array of campy trinkets for visitors, though I think we've learned our lesson with the bacon flavored mints.

In honor of Earth Day, which coincides with our open house, we'll have two different computer and technology recycling services at the station. Each service charges a small fee to recycle old computer equipment, and KRCC will receive a portion of that fee. All gelato and food during the Open House will be served on TaterWare... utensils and dishes made from potatoes! Who knew?

Amy GoodmanWe'll have live music in the backyard throughout the weekend, including, I'm told there is a chance, Euforquestra. Additionally, Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now, plans to stop by the station around 3pm on Sunday to speak and sign her new book STANDING AGAINST THE MADNESS: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times.

I hope you can make it down to the station! Please renew your membership or become a new member of KRCC today!
