New Life Church Nominates New Leader
August 1, 2007 5:09 PM

The evangelical megachurch in Colorado Springs has spent the last eight months looking for a replacement for Ted Haggard, who was dismissed in November after admitting to buying drugs and having a questionable relationship with a male prostitute.

New Life claims a membership of more than 10,000 people. Its pastoral selection committee has chosen Brady Boyd to take over as senior pastor. Boyd is currently an associate senior pastor at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas. An email to New Life members from the head of its selection committee says Boyd has strong leadership gifts, significant experience and training in senior pastoral ministry, and a passion for teaching the Scriptures. The email describes him as "a man of character, proven experience, and good reputation."

Noel Black Interviews Mike Jones
July 11, 2007 4:20 PM

Photo: Noel Black

The man who brought down New Life Church's Pastor Ted Haggard is visiting Colorado Springs to promote his new book. It's called, I Had to Say Something: The Art of Ted Haggard's Downfall. It's author, Mike Jones, has received a frostry reception at Colorado Springs bookstores. Both major national chains here declined to host Jones for signings. Independent bookseller Richard Skorman publicly announced that he wouldn't even sell the book, which he considers poorly written. The gay community has stepped in to show Jones their support and Jones appeared at DJs bar for a signing last Sunday where Noel Black caught up with him.

New Life: Attendance, Giving Remain Down
May 29, 2007 3:48 PM

Screen shot from
"The Root of All Evil?" Part 1.
It's been 7 months since Pastor Ted Haggard was removed as the leader of New Life Church in Colorado Springs. This after he admitted to receiving massages and buying methamphetamine from a gay male prostitute in Denver over a period of years.

Prior to Haggard's departure, New Life claimed a congregation of 14,000 members. A new email from the church to its members now says that attendance remains down 20 to 25 percent, or by 2,800 to 3,500 members. Giving, the church says, remains 8 to 10 percent below pre-scandal levels.

New Life has yet to replace Haggard, but church leaders say they now have four finalists for the job, including Ross Parsely, who is currently a pastor at the church. The candidates will be interviewed in June.

Springs Council Votes Unanimously For Diversity
April 24, 2007 4:05 PM

Colorado Springs city council voted unanimously today (Tue., April 24) to support a festival celebrating diversity.

The vote came two weeks after a pair of council members expressed concern that city sponsorship of a downtown cultural festival this summer could be seen as the city endorsing groups lobbying for pro-homosexual causes.

Council to Debate Diversity
April 23, 2007 5:27 PM

Colorado Springs' city council will vote tomorrow (Tue., April 24) on whether to support a downtown cultural festival this summer. At least two members of council have expressed distaste for sponsoring an event where gay groups might be given a forum to express political views.

Two weeks ago the Springs Gazette quoted councilmember Daryl Glenn questioning whether the festival would give voice to pro-gay marriage views, and councilmember Margaret Radford was quoted as saying, "When a large portion of this community does not support gay and lesbian viewpoints, I don't see us putting tax dollars into supporting that direction."

A group called the Colorado Springs Diversity Forum is sponsoring the event, scheduled for August 18. Its intention is to celebrate the many cultures, talents, tastes and traditions in the city. And the forum is asking the City Council to sponsor the event, in part because that would free it from paying the approximately $4,700 in fees the city charges to provide services to non-city sponsored events. The city staff has recommended sponsoring the event and waiving the fees.

But after city council members questioned whether the city should sponsor the cultural festival over gay issues, a spirited debate erupted in local newspapers' op-ed sections, and at least one local non-profit group, the Citizens Project, is encouraging its members to come to tomorrow's city council meeting to lobby for city sponsorship of the event. Newly elected city council member Jan Martin is a member of the Citizens Project board.

The Springs City Council is scheduled to take up the cultural festival issue tomorrow at 1:00pm.

SOME NATIVE CULTURES ALREADY ACCEPT SAME SEX UNIONS
Whether or not the war, immigration and health care bring people to the polls in November, there's another issue that activists on both sides think will motivate people to vote - same sex unions. Colorado's crowded ballot will feature two proposals, one that would enshrine the definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman in the state constitution, the other would legalize domestic partnerships.
But same sex unions haven't always been a big deal in the west, at least not among some native American cultures, as Alise Widmer reports in this story from Phoenix, filed as part of NPR's "Next Generation Radio" project.
