Closed Doors: Open Democracies?
Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The league of Women Voters of the Pikes Peak Region presents a video presention of a "Sunshine Week" national dialogue on open government and secrecy, moderated by NPR's Talk of the Nation host Ira Flatow.

Panel 1 focuses on National Issues, Panel 2 focuses on state and local issues. Executive Director of OMB Watch Gary Bass concludes with ideas on how to get involved.

It takes place in Room 219 Barnes Science Center, on the Colorado College Campus. Free, the public is welcome to attend - bring a friend!

Parking is available in the CC lot on the south side of Uintah just east of Cascade Avenue. Barnes is the brick building at the southeast corner of the circular quad just east of that Parking lot.

NOTE: This is a VIDEO presentation with IRA FLATOW. A notice in the CS Indy gave the impression that Mr. Flatow would appear in person, which is incorrect.

EPA Air Quality Standards for Colorado

Colorado will likely have more high-pollution days in the years to come thanks to new air quality standards recently set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Efforts are in the works to curb the emissions that cause ozone -- but as KUNC's Brian Larson reports -- it could be awhile before everyone along the Front Range feels the impact...

Walking Off the Worry

Troops from Ft. Carson have been busy in recent weeks in Iraq. They've been seeing combat every day after a period of relative calm.

Families back home are ticking off the fifth month that their loved ones have been away. It will be another ten months before they come home.

Recently some soldiers families got together to celebrate a new program that helps them fight the long deployment blues, and keep them in shape at the same time. KCFR Health Reporter Eric Whitney has the story.

Transportation Gridlock

Governor Bill Ritter has finished his second legislative session since getting elected to office. Some Republicans say he's hit a sophomore slump, failing to provide leadership on key issues such as transportation. Bente Birkeland reports from Denver.

Legislative Session is Over

State lawmakers wrapped up their 120-day legislative session yesterday. A day earlier than scheduled. Republicans and Democrats didn't waste any time putting their spin on the last four months, but there was also a universal sense of relief that it was finally over. Personhood Initiative

Backers of a proposed initiative to amend Colorado's constitution to define an embryo as a person are gathering signatures to secure a spot on the ballot by next week. The so-called "Personhood" amendment is a new strategy being deployed by pro-life activists across the country. And it's facing loud opposition from the pro-choice movement. KUNC's Kirk Siegler reports from Denver.
