On Episode 7 of Air Check, Portland band Ages and Ages drops by for an interview and in-studio performance, Bob Slade, host of KRCC’s Retro Fix, shares some of his favorite songs about work in honor of labor day, we discuss the ever-changing industry of music retail with Judy Negley and Shawn Mayo of Independent Records, Dick Fairley interviews local jazz guitarist, Wayne Wilkinson, and we cop to some guilty pleasure songs.

PART ONE:  PUTTING RESIDENT PUNKER BOB SLADE TO WORK

Listen

It's labor day this week, so we had Bob Slade, host of the Friday night Retro Fix, pick a few punk/new wave favorites that deal with work.

PART TWO: RECORD STORES IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Listen

Next up, we hear from a couple people who've had front row seats to the transformation of the music industry over the last few decades. Judy Negley is the longtime co-owner of Independent Records, which operates three record shops in Colorado Springs, and Shawn Mayo manages the company's flagship store on Platte Avenue. During their time at Independent Records, they've weathered major format changes and the explosion of internet music downloading and streaming, and have seen the role of the record store change dramatically. In this segment, Negley and Mayo speak with Jake Brownell about the joys and challenges of running a record store in the age of the internet.

PART THREE:  PORTLANDIANS AGES AND AGES SIT IN WITH VICKY ON THE MORNING MUSIC MIX

Listen

Ages and Ages was formed in 2009 by a group of musicians out of Portland, Oregon, led by guitarist and vocalist Tim Perry. Since then, they've released a string of great records and have found fans in high places, including our very own President Barack Obama, who included a song of theirs on his playlist during his 2012 re-election campaign. Ages and Ages came in to the studio to play a couple stripped down songs, and talk to Vicky about their music and their career as a band.

PART FOUR: KRCC'S JAZZ GURU MEETS UP WITH A JAZZ GUITAR VIRTUOSO

Listen

In this segment, KRCC Jazz Excursion host Dick Fairley speaks with local jazz guitarist, Wayne Wilkinson. Wilkinson is an accomplished musician, who's played in the Air Force "Falconaires" and "Airmen of Note Bands," and whose career has taken him from Carnegie Hall to the White House. In this conversation, he tells Dick Fairley how he got his start in jazz, discusses his music, and shares some recollections about local jazz legend Johnny Smith.

PART FIVE: GUILTY, SHAMEFUL PLEASURES

Listen

We've all got guilty pleasure songs--songs we blast in the privacy of our own homes but might not recommend to a friend, or even admit we like at all. In this re-imagining of our usual "musical roundtable" segment, Vicky, Jake and Jeff share a song that they'd rather you didn't know they enjoy...

BONUS: We're asking for you, the listener, to share your guilty pleasures with us. Leave a message on the Air Check voicemail, and tell us about song you love in private and why you feel guilty about it. Your message could be featured on an upcoming episode of Air Check!
