Fire Station 22 in northern Colorado Springs officially opened Monday. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the station against a classic Colorado backdrop, the snowcapped Pikes Peak visible to the west.
"Well good morning everybody," greeted interim Fire Chief Ted Collas, who opened remarks. "As is typical for firefighting events, we have lots of open seats and lots of people standing up."
Mayor John Suthers cut the ribbon after expressing his satisfaction with the new station. Fire Station 22 will serve a part of the city that's seen considerable growth in recent years.
"This is an exciting day for Colorado Springs and of course a great day for the Colorado Springs Fire Department," said Suthers. "And frankly it's a great day for almost 10,000 residents in this area who will now be served by Fire Station 22."
The new station is located near Voyager Parkway and Northgate Boulevard. It cost $2.2 million and was mostly paid for by the developer, Northgate Properties, and the city.
Engine 22 and Brush Truck 22 entered service at the end of March. Engine 22 is staffed with four firefighters and also has medical capabilities.
