SARAH BORGES & THE BROKEN SINGLES - "LOVE'S MIDDLE NAME"
Upon seeing this band in a small meeting hall during a music convention in 2007, 91.5 KRCC's Jeff Bieri was impressed enough to bring them to town twice; once at the now defunct 32 Bleu (with Jason Isbell) and again at the inaugural Meadowgrass Music Festival in 2009. They are an exciting act to catch live and just as satisfying on record.
Sarah's strong, clarion call vocals bring to mind post punk, twang infused bands like X and Lone Justice. Previous albums "Diamonds In The Dark" and "The Stars Are Out" showcase the band's ability to cover artists as diverse as Tom Waits, Stephen Merritt, Smokey Robinson and Evan Dando, along side rousers like their own "I'll Show You How" and this record's "Lucky Rocks."
There are few things in this world that delight my ears more than the sound of Low, except for Radiohead, and when a record captures the sonic sensibilities of "Kid A" and the pure beauty of Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk in vocal communion with each other, it has the majesty and intimacy of whispering in a cathedral. Add to that the din and noise of an unstable world and you are face to face with a belief system, whatever yours may be. "Rome (Always In The Dark)" provides the march forward.
