The Sand Creek National Historic Site was established in 2007. It is the only unit of the National Park system devoted to a massacre by US troops.

The National Endowment for the Humanities has granted History Colorado $400,000 for its new Sand Creek Massacre exhibit which will open next year. The grant will help pay for museum staff to visit with tribal members on reservations in other states to ensure inclusive history.
